The very beginning of a legendary stadium...

Item # 646856

February 06, 1921

THE NEW YORK TIMES, February 6, 1921

* Original Yankee Stadium is born
* "The House That Ruth Built"
* Site officially picked

Perhaps it would only be in a New York City newspaper that one would find such great reporting on the very beginning  of what would become a legendary facility: Yankee Stadium.  The top of page 20 has column heads: "YANKEES TO BUILD STADIUM IN BRONX" "Acquire Property on East Bank of Harlem River, Close to Polo Grounds" "Plot Covers Four Blocks" "Plant Will Cost $2,000,000" and more. Included as well is a great artist's rendition of: "How The Yankees' Stadium Will Look When Completed", with a description caption as well. Included also is a: "Map Showing Location of the Stadium to be Built By the New York American League Baseball Club". Much fine text as well, which mentions they had recently abandoned another potential site, where the Hebrew Orphan Asylum was located (see).
This was the "first" Yankee Stadium, referred to as the "House That Ruth Built" which would open for the 1923 season. It would be replaced by a new Yankee Stadium which opened in 2009.
Terrific to have this report in the venerable New York Times.
The complete Sunday newspaper with all 8 sections including the Rotogravure and over 100 pages, disbound, light toning, minor margin wear, should be handled with care.
