A two issue set: CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, Nov. 3 and 4, 1948

* Most recognized and sought after headline of the 20th century

See the photo for what is arguably the most recognizable headline of the 20th century: "DEWEY DEFEATS TRUMAN". Even those not remotely knowledgeable about historic newspapers are familiar with this headline as it appeared in countless history books, historical reviews of the 20th century, and presidential campaign and election reports. It has become an iconic newspaper of the last 100 years.
It was the early edition of this paper which printed this famous error, changed with the second edition. Several bundles of the first edition had already been shipped by train to the Chicago suburbs before the error was realized, and it was only those which had an opportunity to survive, most having been destroyed within a few days of the print date. It is interesting to note that the typesetters of the Tribune were on strike at the time so much of this issue was set using a typewriter, giving it its amateur appearance.  Some sentences are even pasted in upside down.
This issue is complete with all 3 sections (not commonly found as such) with one inconsequential leaf inside lacking, being pages 13-14. As a single leaf it likely fell out through the years, so 52 of the complete 54 pages are present. There is some typical wear at the central fold causing two small holes, some minor tears at the edges of the fold, and very light toning to the top half of the front page (see the photos). The photos show the toning to be more dramatic than is actually the case. Interior pages are in good condition with some minor tears at margins.

As an added bonus, included also is the "Chicago Daily Tribune" of November 4 which has the corrected banner headline: "IT'S TRUMAN BY 1,500,000". A terrific issue to display side-by-side with the November 3 issue. Interesting to note a back page photo which shows the 11 different editions of November 3 which were printed  "...to keep readers abreast of election returns...". This newspaper is complete with all 4 sections, containing 64 of 68 pages with 2 inconsequential leaves lacking from section 3. Minimal wear at the margins and minor cracking at the central fold, some toning at the central fold, but the photo shows it as more dramatic than is actually the case.

Note: This set would typically be priced $850 higher than what is shown. However, we are offering these at a significant discount due to an extraordinary opportunity we recently had to obtain a few of the hard-to-find Dewey Defeats Truman collectable issue.
