April 21, 1865
THE DAILY AMERICAN FLAG, San Francisco, April 21, 1865 Although we have offered many daily newspapers covering the Lincoln assassination, exceedingly few included a front page engraving showing scenes from the assassination. This is one. Actually a rather rare title as this is the first of this newspaper we have ever offered.
All four pages have all columns black-bordered for the death & funeral of Abraham Lincoln, with the front page featuring a terrific engraving captioned: "The Black Assassination of Abraham Lincoln", President of the United States, In Ford's Theatre at Washington on Easter-Eve, April 15, 18685---President Lincoln and His Wife, Miss Harris and Major Rathburn in the Box; the Assassin, John Wilkes Booth, Escaping." The engraving shows John Wilkes Booth jumping from the President's box with a dagger in hand, with Lincoln slumping and his wife & Miss Harris responding (see).
Near the top of the first column are heads on the funeral including: "The Funeral Obsequies of President Lincoln, the Martyr to Freedom" "Extraordinary Demonstration of sorrow" "Grand Exhibition of Decorative Emblems of Woe and much more. More content relating to Lincoln's assassination and funeral inside as well.
Complete in four pages, never bound nor trimmed, a quite small hole in the first column effects just 2 words, very nice condition. There is some ink bleed-through to the front page, otherwise quite nice condition.
