NEW YORK HERALD, July 9, 1864 The front page is dominated by a huge map headed: "THE NAVAL BATTLE OFF CHERBOURG--Scene of the Engagement; Between the Rebel Steamer Alabama and the U.S. Steamer Kearsarge". Most of the first column is taken up with related heads on this famous battle, likely the most distant battle of the entire Civil War as it was fought off the coast of France. The Alabama was an famous commerce raider, attacking Union merchant ships over a 2 year period. It was built in secrecy in England for the Confederate Navy & never docked in an American port.
