Terrific graphic issue on the death of President James Garfield...

Item # 633700

September 26, 1881

THE CLEVELAND LEADER, Ohio, Sept. 26, 1881

* President James S. Garfield death
* Best publication to have ?

See the photos for the terrific & very unusual front page of this issue, which is a huge graphic on the death of President Garfield in the shape of a monument. It looks more like a broadside than the front page of a daily newspaper. Reporting begins on page 8 and continues on page 2. Note also that Garfield is from a suburb of Cleveland making this essentially a hometown newspaper. He is buried in Cleveland.
Eight pages with all columns on all pages black bordered in mourning for Garfield.  Never bound nor trimmed, two folds with various margin & fold tears, minor loss at fold junctures, and some internal archival mends, minor loss to a lower corner of the front leaf.
