November 17, 1827

NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Nov. 17, 1827  A hero of the Battle of the Alamo some nine years later first drew national attention for his involvement in the Sandbar fight in Mississippi. The Sandbar Fight was an Sept. 19 brawl featuring Jim Bowie which first showcased his knife, which later became known as the Bowie knife. The brawl occurred at the conclusion of a duel, and resulted in Bowie being seriously injured. Bowie was nonetheless the victor.
The various details of the bight take almost half a page with the subhead: "Terrible Rencontre" and makes specific mention of the knife which would give him fame: "...they both advanced on each other, Wright with a sword cane, and Bowie with a large butcher knife..." with more (see). The Battle of the Sandbar lasted more than 10 minutes, leaving Samuel Cuny and Norris Wright dead, and another four men - Alfred Blanchard, Carey Blanchard, Robert Crain and Jim Bowie - wounded.
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/4 inches, bit of foxing, tiny pin holes at the blank spine, very nice condition.
