January 03, 1929

THE NEW YORK TIMES, January 3, 1929

* Ironic heading re. Wall Street
* It certainly was a big year - just not what they were predicting

Near the bottom of the front page is a well-to-do heading that announces: "Stock Market Opens 1929 With Buying Rush: 5,413,610-Share Day Stirs Hope of Big Year" (see) Nice to have this contradictory report on the front page of the New York Times when the worst market crash in history was just around the corner that lead to the great depression.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 60 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. A few small binding slits along the spine, nice condition.
