THE WAR, New York, Aug. 31, 1813
* James Lawrence & Augustus Ludlow funerals
Among the many reports on the War of 1812 are: "British Accounts - From Canada" "Descent On Plattsburgh" "British Official Account of the Capture of our Schooners on Lake Ontario" all on the front page. Also beginning on the ftpg. and taking two-thirds of pg. 2 is: "Com. Chauncey's Statement" to the Secretary of the Navy, dated on board the ship Gen. Pike at Sacket's Harbor. It is signed by him in type: Isaac Chauncey, with much on his work in the Great Lakes.
Reports inside include: "Kent Island" "Funeral Solemnities" for both Capt. James Lawrence and Lt. Augustus C. Ludlow, including various details on their funerals. Also: "Croghan's Gallant Feat - Further Particulars" "Gallant Naval Action" "Improved Cannon" and more.
Four pages, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.
This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
