Page 2 begins with "OFFICIAL - By William Hull...A Proclamation" to the inhabitants of Canada which includes near the beginning: "After 30 years of peace & prosperity the United States have been driven to arms...left them no alternative but manly resistance or unconditional submission. The army under my command has invaded your country & the standard of Union now waves over the territory of Canada...it brings neither danger nor difficulty. I come to find enemies, not to make them. I come to protect, not to injure you...". This takes nearly half of the page. This is followed by "General Orders" concerning the creation of new military units, signed in type: H. Dearborn, Major-General U.S. Army.
Other items in this issue include: "Naval & Marine Memoranda" "Latest From England" "'Flags of Truce" "General Observations" "Naval & Military Promotions" which includes: "Captain Bainbridge has been appointed to the command of the frigate Constellation." The back page is taken up with: "First Battle with the British" "Action At Sacket's Harbor" & "English Opinions of the War".
Four pages, 9 3/4 by 12 1/4 in., never-trimmed margins, very nice, clean condition.
This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
