August 17, 1936

THE NEW YORK TIMES, Aug. 17, 1936  Unusual that the front page has a sports headline, this being a 2 column heading: "A.A.U. Suspends Owens; He Refused to Go on Tour" with subhead: "Coach Charges Sports Body Cares Only 'for Its 10%' -- All Indications Are the Olympic Hero Will Turn Professional" with much text which carries over to the sports page. (inside) Here the article continues: "Owens Suspended; Ready to Turn Pro" with a two column photo of "Larry Snyder [his coach] and Jesse Owens in London yesterday." The sports page also has a banner headline: "Olympic Flame Is Extinguished in Picturesque Ceremony Under Floodlights" with much text on the ceremonies & a review of the entire Olympic games with much bias concerning Germany's success in capturing more medals than any other country.
Complete in 32 pages, this is the rare rag edition that was produced on very high quality newsprint, with a high percentage of cotton & linen content, allowing the issues to remain very white & sturdy into the present. Given the subscription cost, libraries & institutions rather than individuals were the primary subscribers of these high-quality editions. Very nice condition.
