A copy of the very first New York Times crossword puzzle...

Item # 621440

February 15, 1942

(reduced from $24) A reprint of the very first NEW YORK TIMES crossword puzzle which was published in The New York Times Magazine, February 15, 1942 (more than one available).

* The first New York Times crossword puzzle - a copy
* A hardcopy print of a high-resolution scan of an original

The original magazine, done in tabloid-size format, was section seven in the Sunday edition of the Times of the same date.

Note: A staple of the Sunday Times for the past 75+ years has been its famous crossword puzzle, and this magazine section has the very first ever created. Page 36 actually contains two puzzles, and a box in the lower right corner notes the beginning of what would become a distinguished tradition: "Beginning today, the New York Times inaugurates a puzzle page. There will be two puzzles each Sunday--one with a flavor of current events and general information, and one varied in theme, ranging from puzzles in a lighter vein, like today's smaller one, to diagramless puzzles of a general nature..." with more (see).

We intentionally printed this on hard card stock so it would not appear to be an original. This is a reprint of the original puzzle, copied from an issue once held within our archives.

Note: Although not included with this listing, a high-resolution digital image (600 DPI) of both the solutions to the 1st puzzle and the 2nd-ever puzzle are available for immediate download on our ETSY Store:
