March 14, 1775

ESSEX GAZETTE, Salem, Massachusetts, March 14, 1775  Page 2 begins with an incredibly rousing call to arms and the pursuit of freedom from Great Britain. Written on the day after the 5th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, bits include: "At this inauspicious day when tyranny lifts her shameless front...The enemies to Freedom, convinced that the Americans are not to be cheated, now openly declare that the colonies must & will be subjected by force: This brings up the last & great question, whether the united colonies can defend their Rights?...I believe they can and will defend them, and if the sword should be drawn against them they may strike such a blow as will shake Britain to the centre..." and much more (see). This is a great letter which prophetically presumes a declaration of independence, which would happen some 15 months later.
Another letter mentions in part: "An artful piece is been handed about here condemning the proceedings of the Congress & ascribing absolute dominion to the King & Parliament...you must sign the paper that you join the King, otherwise you will be declared rebels...". Another letter references a call for what would become this historic Second Continental Congress. Two other items are concerning the issue of importing the detested tea.
Page 2 includes nearly a full column on: "the Art of Tarring and Feathering, not Repealed".
Four pages, tiny archival repair to an upper corner of pg. 2, very nice, clean condition. The masthead features a decorative engraving.
