February 16, 1679

THE LONDON GAZETTE, England, Feb. 16, 1679  The top of the back page has a fascinating report concerning Benjamin Harris, the printer of the very first newspaper in America which he created in 1690 and lasted but a single issue. The report states: "Benjamin Harris Bookseller (lately tryed at Guild Hall for printing and vending the Appeals, etc.) was brought to this Court to receive his judgement and was sentenced to stand in the Pillory, to pay 500 pounds to His Majesty and to give security for his good behaviour for 3 years." Also mention of Samuel Pepys being found innocent (see).
In 1686 Benjamin Harris would emigrate to America where in 1690 he would print "Publick Occurrences Both Forreign and Domestick.
A single sheet newspaper, 6 by 10 inches, blank spine margin trimmed slightly close but not affecting any text. Otherwise nice condition.
