December 03, 1777

THE PENNSYLVANIA LEDGER OR THE PHILADELPHIA MARKET-DAY ADVERTISER, Dec. 3, 1777  This was a Tory newspaper which began in 1775 and closed shop in May of 1778 when the British evacuated Philadelphia.
There is much good reading in this issue with the prime content being the reports of the battles of Germantown and Brandywine.
Page 2 has a nearly full column letter signed by: G. Washington, being his account of the battle of Germantown. This is followed by a brief notice signed in type by: John Hancock.
Page 2 also has a lengthy letter: "To the Citizens of New York and Its Vicinities" which begins: "Understanding that there is a design on foot to raise a battalion of provincial troops..." with more (see), and this is followed by: "Detail of the Proceedings of the Royal Army in Pennsylvania" which is prefaced with: "The action at Brandywine has greatly distinguished the military character of General Sir William Howe." with the actual reporting of the battle of Brandywine beginning: "The rebels, after having fortified Chad's Ford, prepared to dispute the passage..." with more, taking a full column.
Also, the front page has three Proclamations, each signed in type by: W. Howe, all relating to the Revolutionary War and one concerning offering land to those who would enlist in the King's service.
Four pages, very light damp stain to a lower corner, numeric notations in margins next to ads (this was the editor's copy), very nice condition.
