THE BOSTON NEWS-LETTER & NEW-ENGLAND CHRONICLE, July 8, 1762 This title has the distinction of being the very first successful newspaper in America, having begun in 1704 and publishing till the British occupation of Boston in 1776. This issue is from near the end of the French & Indian War.
The top of the front page has a report from Oxford: "Yesterday Benjamin Franklin, Esq., of Pennsylvania, eminent for his many extraordinary improvements in electrical experiments was presented by this University to the honorary degree of Doctor in Civil Law..." with a bit more (see). Inside has a bit: "Major Rogers, who has been on the recruiting service, is returned, having enlisted upwards of 100 men for recruiting his Majesty's regular forces." Also: "The last letters from Fort Prince George advise that the Cherokees behave in the most friendly manner, all their white prisoners, about 20 in number, mostly children, had liberty to go where they pleased...The Creeks have made peace with the Spaniards."
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
