THE REPUBLICAN, Red Wing, Minnesota, Dec. 18, 1880  Page 6 has an article: "Lacrosse" which notes near the beginning: "...describing lacrosse, the Indian pastime which has become the national game of Canada and which is every year becoming more popular..." with a nice description of it and includes some of the rules as well (see). Early for an article on lacrosse in an American newspaper.
