ALLEGANY COUNTY REPORTER, Wellsville, New York, June 2, 1896  Page 3 of this issue has a column-wide headline "Hundreds Dead" with subheads "Hundreds More In Hospitals at St. Louis" "Many Millions Damage" "Scenes of Desolation In the Illfated City and Vicinity". This tornado is ranked as one of the worst natural disasters in U.S. history.
