THE MIRROR NEWS--EXTRA, Los Angeles, Dec. 6, 1957
* Vanguard TV3 embarrassment
* America's 1st attempt to launch satellite
* Early, same day report - Nice for display
The bold banner headline above the masthead announces the embarrassing entry of the United States in the space race with the Soviet Union, with a dramatic & very blunt statement: "SATELLITE FLOPS" with a subhead: "Moon Erupts on Test Stand". Also a four photo: "Picture Sequence Shows Explosion & Burning of Vanguard Rocket at Florida Site."
This monumental failure of America's first attempt at space came just 2 months after the Soviets shocked the world with its successful Sputnik I launch, taking the lead in the space race (see hyperlink for much more).
The complete first section (of 3) with pages 1-22, and in nice condition with minor toning at the fold. Not only an historic issue, but a very displayable one as well. Plus, this is a same-day report, as most newspapers reported the event on Dec. 7.
