Murderer has an appointment to dine with the devil...

Item # 609717

November 07, 1873

NEW YORK TIMES, Nov. 7, 1873  The front page has a very interesting report of a hanging: "The Execution of Wade - A Terrible Scene - Two Attempts to Hang Him - A Hardened Ruffian". The report notes in part: "...but the rope being too long, his feet struck squarely on the ground. In this position he remained, shouting, 'Oh Lord, have mercy!'...He was carried upon the scaffold...the drop was again pulled. He fell this time less than three feet...While the preparations for the execution were being made, Wade maintained the same defiant demeanor...He told the jailor to 'Hurry up, as he had an appointment to dine in hell with the devil at 2 o'clock..." with more (see).
Eight pages, great condition.
