April 06, 1779

THE MARYLAND JOURNAL & BALTIMORE ADVERTISER, April 6, 1779  In addition to being a scarce title from during the midst of the Revolutionary War, this newspaper is noted for being published by a woman, Mary Kathrine Goddard, a rarity in the 18th century printing industry. See the imprint at the bottom of the back page noting; "Printed by M.K. Goddard at  the Post-Office in Market Street." It is very notable that she was in fact the very first (along with her mother) woman newspaper publisher in the colonies when she, her mother, & her brother began "The Providence Gazette" in 1766, a few years before Mary & William went to Baltimore.
She was also the very first woman Postmaster (Baltimore) in the colonies, hence the location of her printing office (see the hyperlink for more on her).
Page 2 has an item from Boston noting: "Every body knows that peace, founded on a concession of the independence of America, is the interest of Britain; and that every view of her affairs absolutely demands it. But the interest of Britain, & that of Sir Henry Clinton & the army, are two things..." with more. Another report, from Trenton, notes: "...a large body of the enemy from New York arrived on Staten Island...they had a plundering expedition in contemplation...a strong detachment from our army under the command of Gen. Muhlenberg marched from Middle Brook in order to counteract any designs the enemy may have in making another descent into this state. We hear Major-Gen. Arnold hath obtained leave to retire for awhile from the duties of his station...". Also a "Proclamation" for a day of thanksgiving & prayer ordered by the Continental Congress, signed: John Jay, President.
Several other reports concerning the war as well as seen in the photos. Four pages, minor margin wear, some  minor foxing, generally good.
