April 22, 1861

DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, April 22, 1861  Almost half of the front page is taken up with reports of the skirmish which resulted in  the first casualties of the Civil War, when Union troops were stoned by a secessionist mob in Baltimore. The top of the front page has column heads: "The First Engagement!" "Northern Volunteers Repulsed at Baltimore" "Massachusetts Soldiers Killed!" "Passage of Several Cars" "Murder of Marylanders!" "Calling Out of City Military" "The Railroads Decline to Pass any More Northern Troops" "Scenes & Incidents".
Also at the top of the front page are: "The War" "Affairs in Georgia--Noble Instances of Loyalty Among the Negroes in North Carolina--New York & the War--The Feeling in Philadelphia". Page 2 has a lengthy editorial headed: "Will They Persist in this War?", plus it has: "Another Proclamation! By the President of the U. States of America" signed in type: Abraham Lincoln. More reporting on pages 2, 3 & 4.
A wealth of early war content from this city which would soon become the capital of the Confederate States of America. Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, some weakness at the folds, generally in nice condition.
