March 19, 1862

We rarely have the opportunity to come across Civil War letters, but here is a nice one dated at: "Camp on Lower Potomac  March 19, 1862". Included with this four page letter (back page blank) is my translation as best could be done. Handwriting & spelling were not strengths of many Civil War soldiers, but this letter writer had rather good handwriting. Portions of the letter include: "...hope and pray that you and the children are all well at home...We are still in the same place yet...quit a fleet of steamboats went down the river with troops on board...they were going to reinforce Burnside's expedition...think that this war will soon be ended as the rebels is a retreating. One of our regiments went over the river..." and various family matters, etc. It is signed: John R. Limon.
The letter measures 5 by 8 inches and is in very nice condition.
