NATIONAL INTELLIGENCER, Washington, D.C., May 29, 1856 Page 3 has an item from the Senate headed: "Report On the Assault Case" which is the case of Preston Brooks beating Charles Sumner, which includes in part: "...assault him with considerable violence, striking him numerous blows on and about the head with a walking stick..." with more (see).
