FEDERAL ORRERY, Boston, Feb. 16, 1795 Almost all of pages 1 and 2 are taken up with an: "Essay On the City of Washington", being a terrific, lengthy & quite detailed piece on the creation of this city as the nation's capital, with commentary on the buildings, etc. Just a few of the items within include: "To found a city in the centre of the United States for the purpose of making it...the sanctuary of the laws which must one day rule all North America is a grand & comprehensive idea...The federal city...is a temple erected to liberty...could not be calculated on a small scale...The ground on which the city is laid out is healthy and fertile...The city will cover a surface of nearly 4000 acres...When Major L'Enfant conceived the vast & magnificent plan...his attention was first directed to the situation now occupied by the capitol. Here he fixed the centre of the city...The capitol of which is constructed on the plan drawn by Mr. Hallet, will be one of the most spacious modern edifices...will be embellished with a colonnade of the Doric order...The second principal building is the house intended for the president of the United States; it is constructed on the plan designed by Mr. Hoban..." with much, much more on the streets, the gardens, other buildings, etc., etc.
