March 15, 1858

TYPE OF THE TIMES, Cincinnati, March 15, 1858  As noted in the masthead this is: "A Journal of the Writing & Spelling Reform". This little periodical is from a time when shorthand (invented in 1837) and phonetic spelling were popular movements. Some of the content in the back portion of this issue are printed in the Phonetic Alphabet (see).
The front page has a fascinating report of interest to any rare newspaper collector, as it solidly dates one of the earlier facsimile editions of the infamous "Ulster County Gazette" of Jan. 4, 1800 with the report of Washington's death. The report reads in part: "A Fac-simile of an old style newspaper for Jan. 4, 1800, in which was printed the Congressional Proceedings in regard to the death of Washington, has been reprinted by the undersigned, as a curiosity..." with a bit more (see).
Sixteen pages, 6 3/4 by 10 inches, a bit of foxing, generally very nice condition. A rare periodical.
