THE NEW YORK TIMES, New York, April 16, 1947 The following reporting is on the Jackie Robinson's debut during the Major League Season. He had made a public debut game on April 11th, however that was in a pre-season game.
Page 32 has "Sports of the Times - Opening Day At Ebbets Field" which features "The Robinson Debut". "The debut of Jackie Robinson was quite uneventful, even though he had the unenviable distinction of snuffing out a rally by hitting into a remarkable double play... 'I'm for him, if he can win games. That's the only test I ask.' And that seems to be the general opinion...". The report of the game is "Double By Reiser Beats Boston, 5-3" "Dodger Star Bats in 2 Runs, Scores One in 7th Inning of Ebbets Field Opener" and more. Also included is a 5 x 5.5 inch picture of Robinson involved in a play at first base.
Also on page 32: "GREENBERG DOUBLE DOWN CUBS,1 TO 0 " "Scores Cox in 6th for Pirate Victory...." with smaller subheads and box scores. This tells of Hank Greenberg's National League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates. This would be his last year as a MLB player.
Other news, sports and advertisements of the day throughout.
