May 08, 1788

THE INDEPENDENT CHRONICLE, Boston, May 8, 1788 This is one of the most desired & elusive issues of this Boston title to be had, as it contains one of the cherished "pillar cartoons". More typically found in the better circulated "Massachusetts Centinel", these pillar cartoons are considerably more rare when found in this title, the "Independent Chronicle".
The top of page 3 has a somewhat large illustration headed: "Ratification of the Federal Constitution by the State of Maryland" showing seven upright pillars, each labeled with a state in the order they ratified the Constitution. The last upright pillar is labeled "Mary." signifying that it had just ratified the Constitution. Also shown in the cartoon is a "leaning pillar" labeled "N. Hamp.", with a note: "It will yet rise." (see)
Beneath the cartoon is lengthy covers from the Maryland Constitution Convention with the various details of the process by which it recently arrived at a vote to ratify, the vote being 63 for ratification, and 11 against it (see).
Complete in four pages, never-trimmed margins, a very discrete archival mend at the blank spine, very nice condition.
