The case of fugitive slave Anthony Burns was a very notable one attracting national attention to the evils of the Fugitive Slave Act, just enacted in 1850. This issue has one of the detailed accounts of the Burns case to be found in a period newspaper, the amount of space devoted to the case being evidence of the national interest. The report gives much detail on the hatred towards the Fugitive Slave Act this incident created, and much sympathy for Anthony Burns. See the photos for the full report.
