December 26, 1862

THE LIBERATOR, Boston, Dec. 26, 1862  A very famous anti-slavery newspaper published by the noted emancipator William Lloyd Garrison. The ornate engraving in the masthead features three scenes: a slave auction, an image of Jesus breaking the bonds of the oppressors, and a slave family about to depart for their journey to emancipation.
A substantial portion of this last issue for the year is devoted to the Emancipation Proclamation, in advance of Lincoln's anticipated official presentation on January 1, 1863. The top of page 2 has: "The Eventful Day" and what follows is the complete text of the Proclamation signed by him in type: Abraham Lincoln. Following it is some great text beginning: "The eventful day indicated in this Proclamation is at hand, and, as it draws near, the hearts of all true friends of freedom are palpitating with hope & fear as to its enforcement or possible modification..." with much more (see). Page 3 has another report relating to it which includes: "...believing that the Proclamation of President Lincoln, emancipating forever all slaves held in States found in rebellion on the first day of January, 1863, will, if energetically & uncompromisingly enforced, inflict a staggering blow upon that fearfully oppressive system...".
Also in this issue are: "Emancipation Day" "The Slaves of Rebels Protected by the American Flag" "The President's Emancipation Proclamation" "The Emancipation Proclamation in Tennessee" "Employment For Liberated Negroes" and even more.
Four pages, some light foxing, some light toning, generally nice condition.
