September 27, 1794
COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, October 4, 1794 This issue has content relating to the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania. This was a tax protest by farmers who sold their grain in the form of whiskey. The Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated that the new national government had the willingness and ability to suppress violent resistance to its laws.
Page 2 has a very significant "Proclamation" signed in type by the President: Geo. Washington. This was his second proclamation ordering the suppression of the insurrection by the militia led by Henry Lee. The insurgents would ultimately return home quietly thus ending the rebellion in mid-November.
Four pages, nice condition.
