December 05, 1780

THE PENNSYLVANIA PACKET, Philadelphia, Dec. 5, 1780  Page 3 has a brief bit which mentions: "...arrived...from Boston...an account that a 20 gun ship was seen...which we supposed to be the Ariel, commanded by captain John Paul Jones, which is very likely to be the case...", followed by a letter from Major General Gates to Congress with a report on the Battle of Fishdam Ford: "...aid-de-camp to major general Sullivan arrived in camp...that General Sumpter...after a severe contest with major Wemyss defeated him and his whole command...many were left dead on the ground...The enemy do not now possess a single post east of George-Town or north Camden..." with more (see).
The back page has: "A Proclamation" from the President of Pennsylvania for a day of thanksgiving & prayer, in part for the fortunately discovery of Benedict Arnold's treasonous actions, noting: "...the late remarkable interpositions of his watchful providence in  rescuing the person of our Commander in Chief and the Army from imminent dangers at the moment when treason was ripened for execution..." (see).
Four pages, never-trimmed margins, very nice clean condition. One of the more handsome mastheads of the Revolutionary War era with very ornate lettering and a nice engraving of a ship (see).
