May 24, 1729

THE NORWICH GAZETTE, England, May 24, 1729  See the photo below for the tremendous detail in the masthead of this early newspaper showing the skyline of Norwich. Individual buildings and even the windows can be seen in this woodblock engraving. There are insets in the upper corners as well, one showing the patron Saint George slaying a dragon.
Page 2 has a report of sentences handed down to the workers of the newspaper "Mist's Journal" for what they had printed on the previous August 24, with one of the workers sentenced to: "...walk round the Four courts in Westminster Hall with a paper on his forehead denoting his offence, and to suffer one month's imprisonment...." (see)
The back page includes 7 illustrated ads, one for a runaway servant. Four pages, 8 1/4 by 10 1/4 inches, great condition. Partial red ink tax stamp at the bottom of the front page. An extremely displayable newspaper.
