June 10, 1776

HAMPSHIRE CHRONICLE, Southampton, England, June 10, 1776  See for the very handsome masthead. The front page has more than a full column taken up with reports on the Revolutionary War, headed "America" and noting in part: "...I have the pleasure to acquaint you that we had an engagement with the Tories at Widow Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge on the 27th current. Our army was about 1000 strong consisting of the Newbern battalion of minute-men..." and more (see) with much detail on this battle fought near Wilmington, North Carolina. This is followed by a letter signed in type by: G. Washington, concerning events in the war (see). Than by more war reports, one beginning: "By the Albany post we are informed that Governor Carleton had shot 17 of his men for refusing to fight..." and other reports, including one noting: "...landed 700 men on the 18th...to succour Quebec. On the 26th General Arnold, who continued to lie before it, attempted that place again by storm which he continued with great fury...finding the garrison impregnable...General Clinton...has likewise defeated the provincial forces in Virginia under the command of General Lee who was taken prisoner..." and even more (see).
There are numerous war-related reports inside as well including a brief letter signed in type by: Israel Putnam (see). Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, full red tax stamp on the front page, nice condition.
