SOUTHERN CITIZEN, Ashborough, [Asheboro], North Carolina, May 5, 1838
* Rare title from pre Civil War South
* Nice illustrated slave ad
The first newspaper in all of Randolph county was this one, the "Southern Citizen", having begun on Dec. 31, 1836 and ending around 1844. The prime content would be the very nice "$50 Reward" ad on the back page for "A Man Slave", with an engraving of a man running which is larger than most, and type that is larger than most as well (see).
This is a typical newspaper of the day with a good mix of news reports and ads. While past issues we have had of this title have been in rather poor, repaired condition, this issue is comparatively nice with no archival mends although wear at the margins & some very light damp staining.
