October 29, 1771

THE ESSEX GAZETTE, Salem, Massachusetts, Oct. 29, 1771  A nice engraving in the masthead. The front page has: "A Proclamation" By the Governor" for a day of thanksgiving & praise, signed in type: T. Hutchinson. The front page also has much news from London, one item noting: "It is said, in regard to the colonies, that all due obedience to the Mother Country will be insisted on, & that in return every necessary assistance & protection will be afforded...". The front page also has news from New Bern, North Carolina, which mentions: "...every day entertains with the tragical story of Governor Tryon's massacre of his brethren in iniquity, in North Carolina..." and other items.
Page  2 has a rather forward-thinking letter titled: "Independency" taking two-thirds of a column & ending with: "...America is young, & will have its day; she will undoubtedly rise to eminence & great glory, long survive the death of her parent state, and flourish in freedom when Britain (like many other once famous kingdoms) shall live only in the historic page." (see) Also on page 2 is a report from Charleston concerning the situation with Indians, and also mention from Philadelphia that: "...Joseph Galloway was chosen Speaker; and ?Benjamin Franklin, Esq., appointed Agent for this Province at the Court of Great Britain for the year ensuing."
Page 3 has reference to the Boston Massacre with mention that: "We hear that Captain Preston, who was lately justified by the laws of his country for killing some rioters on the 5th of March, 1770, has had a still further compensation from his sovereign for his services..." (see)
Four pages, scattered foxing to the front page, very nice condition.
