January 18, 1731

* Rare Colonial document

A colonial Massachusetts document dated January 18, 1731, being the details of a judgment against Lewis Charles Franevelle to the favor of Aaron Bourne, a physician (see).  This is a Writ of Execution, whereby a county under-sheriff is ordered to seize the goods of a particular person against whom a judgment was rendered in court on the basis of some lawsuit.  The under-sheriff is also ordered to seize the judgment debtor and throw him in jail. However, by the statement on the back it appears the under-sheriff returned the writ to the court saying that he had found neither the person nor the estate of the debtor, and therefore execution of the judgment was not made.  In other words, he couldn't find the guy or any of his property to seize.
Part printed & part manuscript, still with the nice red wax seal in the upper left margin and with signature at the bottom. Measures 7 1/2 by 12 inches and in great condition. A very nice, early document for display.
