DAILY DISPATCH, Richmond, Virginia, Feb. 25, 1862
* Abraham Lincoln's son (Willie) death
* Jefferson Davis Davis proclamation
* From the capital of the Confederacy
A nice newspaper from the capital of the Confederacy. Among the frontn page content is three columns of advertisements & notices, plus much reporting on: "The Federal Congress--Hon. Mr. Vallandigham Again arraigned for Disloyalty--Spicy Debate" "Northern War News with many subheads including: "Yankee Women Begging Under False Pretenses--The Condition of Things in Western Virginia--A Hard Yankee Yarn..." and more.
Page 2 has much on the war including a: "Proclamation By The President" for a day of thanksgiving & prayer, signed in type by: Jefferson Davis (see). Also: "Fresh Courage--Vigorous Action" "Conduct of the War" "Confederate Congress" "Further Intelligence From Tennessee" "Death of Old Abe's Son" and more.
The report with a mini head: "The Death of The President's Son" reads in part: "Amid the general joy excited by the success of the Union cause, a black shadow has fallen upon the Presidential mansion...share in the deep grief occasioned by the death of little Willie Lincoln. He was a boy of such promise that all who became acquainted with him had predicted for him a career of no ordinary character...The body of Willie Lincoln was embalmed to-day...The result was entirely satisfactory to the attendant friends of the family. Thaddeus, the youngest son of the President, is still dangerously ill. Fears are entertained that his disease will assume the type which proved fatal to his brother." (see). Interesting to find such a respectful report on a Confederate newspaper.
War reports carry over to pg. 3 with: "Rumors" "The Secretary of War" & other smaller items, plus a wealth of ads including three headed "Runaways".
Four pages, scattered foxing, nice condition.
