THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL, Memphis, Tennessee, January 17, 1935

* Ma Barker and Fred Barker
* Florida outlaws killings (1st report)

The front page contains one column headlines announcing the death of Ma and Pa Barker, notorious outlaws from the 1930's. These headlines include: "FEDERAL AGENTS GET WOMAN AND SON IN MACHINE GUN BATTLE", "Government Marksmen Shoot 'Ma' and Fred Barker in Florida", "Called Brains Of Gang" and more (see photos). 1st report coverage on this famous gun battle.

Other news, sports and advertisements of the day. Complete in 20 pages, light browning, a little margin wear, otherwise good.

wikipedia notes: FBI Agents discovered the hideout of Ma Barker and her son, Fred, after Arthur "Doc" Barker was arrested in Chicago on January 8, 1935, and a map found in his possession indicated that the other gang members were in Ocala, Florida. Federal Agents surrounded the house the morning of January 16, 1935. Ordered to surrender, the two Barkers decided to fight it out, and were killed in the subsequent gun battle. According to the FBI, a Tommy gun was found lying in the hands of Ma Barker (many believe this to be a fabrication by the FBI in order to justify her violent death).
