November 29, 1660

MERCURIUS PUBLICUS, London, England, Nov. 29, 1660 Here is an uncommon title in newsbook format (the forerunner of newspapers) "Comprising the sum of all Affairs now in agitation in England, Scotland, and Ireland, Together with Forrain Intelligence For Information of the People, & to Prevent false News" as stated in the masthead. (see)
Although we have offered several newsbooks in recent years, I believe this is one of the less common titles we have offered, and this one earlier than the others dated 1662.
The entire issue is taken up with various reports from all corners of Europe, much of it having a military theme. One item reports: "The Turkish Pyrates domineer at Sea at their own pleasure , they have lately taken a small Holland vessel coming from the Poelic and forced another to run ashore, they likewise chased two French ships so far that the stranded upon these coasts." and a fit further on another report begins: "A barge coming from Algiers reports that the Turkish Pyrates have taken three or four ships..." with more (see photos). Another item notes: "Letters form Spain make mention of an alteration of the Spanish Coyn mixed with copper and silver, or which but the fifth part is silver: And although on the Spanish side it is pretended, that this will cause no prejudice to commerce yet it is commonly believed that an utter ruine of the Spanish Trade & Commerce is like to ensue thereupon."
The back page has an item noting: "On Sunday last Tench, the Carpenter (employ'd to build the Scaffold wherein His late Majesty of ever glorious memory was martyr'd) was apprehended and sent close prisoner to the Gate-house, Westminster." (see photos) and also: "This is that Laird Warriston who was so subservient to that Monster Oliver Cromwell, to the ruine and slavery of his own Countrey, which preferr'd him to be one of the Lords of Oliver's other house, as well as President of the Committee of Safety." (see)
Measures 6 by 8 inches, 16 pages, light water staining which causes no loss of readability, otherwise very nice.
