wikipedia notes: The 1940 Detroit Tigers won the American League pennant with a record of 90-64, but lost the 1940 World Series to the Cincinnati Reds 4 games to 3. The season was their 40th since they entered the American League in 1901. It was the sixth American League pennant for the Tigers.

The 1940 Tigers were led by: Hank Greenberg who won his second American League MVP award; Rudy York who was #2 in the AL behind Greenberg in RBIs, total bases and extra base hits; Barney McCosky who led the major leagues in hits and triples; and Bobo Newsom who led the major leagues in Adjusted ERA+ and was #2 in the AL behind Bob Feller in ERA, wins, and winning percentage.

With the expansion of Briggs Stadium, the Tigers set a major league attendance record with 1,112,693 fans attending games in 1940. The 1940 Tigers were the first team to draw 1,000,000 or fans.
