August 05, 1863

DAILY RICHMOND EXAMINER, Virginia, Aug. 5, 1863  Not only a nice Confederate newspaper, but one from the capital of the Confederacy. Among the front page reports are those headed: "The War In the Far West--Full Particulars of The Battle At Helena" "Promotions By The President" and a: "Proclamation By the President of the Confederate States" which is signed in type: Jefferson Davis, for a day of thanksgiving and prayer (see). Also several smaller items, and a full column Act of the Confederate Congress for the collection of taxes.
More war reporting on the back page as well, including: "Telegraphic News From Mississippi" and a very lengthy: "Address of the President to the Soldiers of the Confederate States which is essentially a rallying call to enthuse the troops & citizens while also offering pardon to deserters, bits including: "...You know too well, my countrymen, what they mean by success. Their malignant rage aims at nothing less than the extermination of yourselves, your wives, and children. They seek to destroy what they cannot plunder...victory is within your reach. You need by stretch forth your hands to grasp it...I call on you, then, my countrymen, to hasten to your camps...& summon those who have absented themselves without leave...to repair without delay to their respective commands...I grant a general pardon & amnesty to all officers & men within the Confederacy, now absent without leave..." with much more (see).
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a full banner masthead, small piece in the upper left corner affects only blank margin, very nice condition.
