August 22, 1798

THOMAS'S MASSACHUSETTS SPY OR WORCESTER GAZETTE, Aug. 22, 1798  Taking close to a full column on the back page is the third of the four controversial Alien & Sedition Acts. Under the threat of war with France, Congress in 1798 passed four laws in an effort to strengthen the Federal government. Known collectively as the Alien and Sedition Acts, the legislation sponsored by the Federalists was also intended to quell any political opposition from the Republicans, led by Thomas Jefferson. This third act is titled: "An Act Respecting Alien Enemies" and allowed the President to apprehend & deport resident aliens if their home countries were at war with the United States. It is signed in type by the President: John Adams (see photos). It is followed by another Act of Congress, unrelated to this event.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, scattered foxing throughout, nice condition.
