THE POST-BOY, London, July 27, 1723 The ftpg. has a report datelined "Rhode Island, May 9" concerning various ship arrivals, and also noting the taking of ships and: "...after the Spaniards had taken the above said three vessels, Capt. Loe and Capt. Lowder, Commanders of two Pyrate vessels, came into the bay & retook the said three Rhode Island sloops and put the 60 Spaniards to the sword except seven who swam ashore. They also inform'd that it was reported that the Pyrates had kill'd one Benjamin Wickham...who lay sick of the small pox..." with more on pirate encounters carrying over to the back page, which includes: "...and four New England ships. The pyrates cut off the ears of one of the New England captains & obliged him to eat them and afterwards sunk his hip. The Pyrates, viz. two sloops of 10 guns each and 150 men, commanded by one Lowe, were chased by the Mermaid Man of War..." and even more mention of pirates. The two mentions of "Lowe" or "Loe" noted above would be one of the more infamous pirates, captain Ned Low. Do a google search for more information on him.
Single sheet, 8 1/2 by 13 3/4 inches, bit close-trimmed at the top partially affects the top line of column one, otherwise in very nice condition.
