April 01, 1867

DAILY TIMES, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, April 1, 1867  Page 2 has a very significant report--and very early--on the Alaska Treaty whereby America purchased Alaska from Russia, headed: "All Russian American Territory Ceded to the U. States". The report is datelined from Washington on March 30, which history tells us is the official date of the purchase, and includes in part: "...a treaty with Russia by which that power surrenders to the United States its sovereignty over all Russian-American and adjacent islands. The price to be paid for the territory is about seven million dollars...Its chief value consists in its fisheries & its fur trade..." with a bit more (see).
This report is the day after the event.  Complete as a small folio, four page newspaper in great condition.
