* Titus Oates is found guilty of perjury in the Popish Plots

The world's oldest, continually published newspaper having begun in 1665 and is still printing today. The back page has a significant report in the Popish Plot situation in England, where Titus Oates fabricated a supposed Catholic conspiracy to kill King Charles II (proven untrue). The back page, under the dateline of:: "Westminster, May 9" is a report noting: "Yesterday and this day Titus Oates was tryed at the Kings-Bench Bar upon two several indictments of perjury formerly preferred against him by the command & direction of the late King of ever blessed memory, which should have been tryed the last term had not his Majesties death prevented it, and now upon a full & clear evidence the said Titus Oates was convicted of perjury upon both the said indictments..." with just a bit more (see).
