June 27, 1857

FRANK LESLIE'S ILLUSTRATED NEWSPAPER, New York, June 27, 1857  This is one of the more desired issues of this title of its 65 years of publication. The front page contains three images, one captioned; "Eliza and Lizzie, Children of Dred Scott", another: 'His Wife, Harriet" and the other of: "Dred Scott" himself.
History tells us that Dred Scott figured in one of the landmark cases in American jurisprudence regarding slavery, now referred to as the Dred Scott Decision. In essence, slave Dred Scott was taken north by his owner to the free state of Illinois, then returned to Missouri. Scott sued for his freedom. The majority of the Supreme Court ruled that Scott never ceased to be a slave, and that Congress has no right to deprive citizens of their property--such as slaves--anywhere within the United States.
The text on the front page is headed: "Visit to Dred Scott--His Family--Incidents of His Life--Decision of the Supreme Court" with the text carrying over to take half of page two (see images).  The last subhead in this article is: "Principal Points Decided by the Supreme Court in the Dred Scott Case" (see).
Complete with all 16 pages, just the slightest bit of occasional age toning, mostly near the margins, minor evidence of disbinding at the spine. Generally in very nice condition.
