Ernie Harwell 1st game broadcast....

Item # 568944

August 05, 1948

THE NEW YORK TIMES, New York, August 5, 1948

* Ernie Harwell very 1st game as the announcer
* Brooklyn Dodgers - Ebbets Field
* MLB Baseball

This 44 page newspaper has a banner headline on page 26:

* Giants Lose Twice to Cards, Drop to 4th as Dodgers Win and Take 3d Place

with subheads that include: "Dodgers Set Back Cubs by 5 to 4 On Single by Edwards in the Ninth" and more with box scores. (see)

Though not mentioned, Ernie Harwell, filling in for Red Barber who is recovering from a bleeding ulcer, calls his first major league game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chicago Cubs at Ebbets Field. Great to have in this famous NYC title.

Of course there was no reason to report something like this in a newspaper but this was his very 1st game as a major league announcer.

Other news of the day throughout. Rag edition in very nice condition.
