November 26, 1864
DAILY EXAMINER, Richmond, Virginia, November 26, 1864 Not only is this a nice newspaper from the Confederacy, but it is from the Confederate capital & consequently has much reporting from the Confederate Congress.
The front page has: "The War News" which begins: "The Northern papers announce that the Dutch Gap Canal is near to completion..." with more, and subheads: "From Petersburg" "From Georgia". Also: "The News From Georgia--The Advance of the Enemy--Burning of Atlanta". Part of the text reads like a scene from "Gone With The Wind", including: "...the view from the summit of Stone mountain of the conflagration of Atlanta was awful beyond description. The Gate City was 'an ocean of flame' as the firey waves rose & fell throughout its whole extend...at Stone mountain they burned all the unoccupied houses...& were laying waste the country as they progressed..." & more (see photos). Also: "...Sherman must move fast obtain his object speedily or he is list; unless the whole state of Georgia are cowards and poltroons. In a state of war we must not all expect to escape unscathed. Where the enemy marches he will leave his work of destruction. Sherman has cut loose from his base--Georgians must see that he makes no other...". A subhead reads: "Speculations About Sherman's Movements--The Resistance He Will Encounter--No Need of Alarm" with the closing paragraph reflecting a very optimistic, pro-Confederate theme: "...We can see nothing for which teh people need become alarmed, but much to hope for. A firm, unfaltering heart & determined resolution is all we want at present & a few weeks will perhaps suffice to drive the last vandal from the soil of Georgia." (see).
The back page has a lengthy editorial which begins: "While the North & the South are holding one another, in the language of General Grant, 'by the throat', the others nations of the world are taking order...". Another report begins: "The news from Georgia, now the most interesting of all, is exceedingly meagre and untrustworthy. But no doubt can now be entertained of Sherman's design, or of his destination..." with more, speculating on Sherman's future movements (see photos). It ends with: "...It is evidently highly important that Sherman should never take Augusta or Macon & should never reach Beaufort."
Also on the back page: "Latest News From the North---From Grant's Army--The Great Battle to Come Soon--From The Valley--From Sherman's Army". The back page also has over two columns of reports from the: "Confederate States Congress"
Complete as a single sheet newspaper with a one column masthead, not uncommon from the South in the latter part of the war as every effort was made to conserve printing space. In very nice condition with wide margins.
