This famous ocean steamer crashed upon a rock about fifty yards from Meagher's Island, Halifax, Nova Scotia, on April 1. It was one of the most disastrous wrecks on the North American coast for not only was the vessel and nearly all the cargo a total loss, but 545 people were lost, many of them with scarcely a moment's warning.
