July 26, 1934

THE NEW YORK TIMES, New York, NY, July 26, 1934

* Engelbert Dollfuss assassinated by Nazis
* Austrian dictator
* Nazi coup fails

This 40 page newspaper has a nice five column headline on the front page: "AUSTRIAN NAZIS KILL DOLLFUSS, PUTSCH FAILS; 144 PLOTTERS HELD; FEY ORDERS MARTIAL LAW;  ITALIAN ARMY, NAVY, PLANES READY TO ACT" with many subheads and photo of Dollfuss. More inside. Nice to have in this famous NYC title.

Other news of the day throughout. Some browning and little wear around the margins, otherwise in good condition.

Dollfuß was assassinated in July 25, 1934 by eight Austrian Nazis (Paul Hudl, Franz Holzweber, Otto Planetta and others[1]) who entered the Chancellery building and shot him in an attempted coup d'état, the July Putsch.[2] It was only thanks to the Heimwehr who attacked the forming units of Nazi agents that the coup did not succeed[citations needed]. Also Mussolini assembled the Italian army on the Austrian border and made Hilter understand that he will fight Italian forces should he invade Austria as originally planned already for 1934. The assassination of Dollfuss was accompanied by Nazi upheavals in many regions in Austria, resulting in further dozens of dead. Especially in Carinthia a large contingent of northern German Nazis tried to grab power but were subdued by the patriotic Heimwehr units in Austria's southern-most province. However, the Nazi assassins in Vienna surrendered and were executed. Kurt Schuschnigg became the new chancellor of Austria. Previously, in October 1933, Dollfuß had already escaped an assassination attempt by Rudolf Dertill, a 22-year old who was ejected from military for his national-socialist views.

Dollfuß was buried in the Hietzing cemetery in Vienna[citation needed], alongside his wife Alwine Dollfuß and two of his children, Hannerl and Eva.
